The ethnicity guesser looks at your facial features and estimates which world regions they most resemble, shown as percentages. It reflects appearance in one photo, not ancestry — only a DNA test can tell you where your family comes from.
What is an ethnicity guesser?
An ethnicity guesser looks at a face in a photo and guesses which world regions that appearance most resembles. This one gives a top match ("closest appearance match") and four to six regions with percentages that add up to about 100, each with a note on which visible traits suggested it.
It is an appearance-based guess for curiosity and fun. It does not know your ancestry, your family history or your identity, and it never treats its guess as fact.
What ethnicity do I look like? How the guess is made
An AI vision model reads one photo and compares what it sees with its general visual impression of how faces vary across regions. It considers features such as eye shape, brow and nose shape, skin tone, hair colour and texture, and overall face shape.
There is no DNA, no database of faces and no measurement against population samples. The percentages express how strongly the impression leans towards each region, not a breakdown of your genes. In the full details, the result explains how the guess was made and which features suggested each region.
Want a closer look at specific features? Our eye shape detector and face shape detector measure them directly from landmarks.
Can AI tell your ethnicity from a photo?
No. AI can only guess what a face looks like, not what someone's ethnicity is. Ethnicity is about culture and heritage, and none of that is visible in a photo. What an AI can do is notice visible traits and say which regions they are commonly associated with, which is exactly what this tool does, and it says so on every result.
That guess can be interesting. Many people enjoy seeing which regions a photo leans towards, comparing results with friends, or seeing how close an appearance guess comes to a DNA test they have already taken. It is also a useful reminder of how unreliable judging people by their faces is: the same person can get a noticeably different result from a photo in different light.
Treat the percentages as a talking point, not a label. They are not a measure of how much of any background you have, and a low or missing percentage for a region does not mean you have no ancestry there.
Race vs ethnicity vs ancestry
These words are often used interchangeably, but they mean different things:
- Ethnicity is about shared culture — language, traditions, religion, food and a sense of common heritage. You cannot see it in a photo.
- Race is a social category, usually based on perceived physical traits such as skin colour. Its definitions differ between countries and have changed over time.
- Ancestry is where your ancestors came from, which can be traced through family records and DNA.
So despite the name, an "ethnicity guesser" really guesses appearance. That is why the result says "closest appearance match" and "appearance-based guess, not DNA".
Why your result can be wrong
Appearance overlaps across regions, and one photo can mislead. Common reasons a guess is off:
- Lighting and camera: warm bulbs, shade, white-balance and exposure shift skin tone in the photo.
- Makeup, tanning and hair dye change exactly the traits the AI looks at.
- Mixed heritage: many people's ancestry spans several regions, and features from any of them can show more or less.
- Variation within regions: people from the same place look very different from each other, so no region has a single "look".
- Angle and expression change how eye and nose shape read.
If the result surprises you, that says more about the limits of guessing from a face than about who you are.
How to learn your real ancestry
For real ancestry, use a DNA test and family records, not a photo. Consumer autosomal DNA tests compare your DNA with reference groups and estimate which regions your ancestors came from. Different companies use different reference groups, so their estimates can differ from each other, and they become more detailed as reference data grows.
Family records — birth and marriage certificates, census entries, immigration papers and conversations with older relatives — add names, places and stories that DNA alone cannot.
Using the ethnicity guesser respectfully
Use it on your own photo. Guessing someone else's background from their face without asking is a different thing, and it can be hurtful. The tool only analyses adults; if a photo could show someone under 18, it gives no result.
The result describes visible traits only. It never comments on the worth or attractiveness of any group, and it does not use stereotypes. A face is not an identity, and how you describe your ethnicity is up to you.
Is the ethnicity guesser free?
Yes. Your closest appearance match, the summary and half of the region percentages are free. The full details — every region with its percentage and the features behind it, why photos can mislead and how to learn your real ancestry — cost 20 credits, one time. Credits never expire and there is no subscription. Free analyses are limited per device per day.
Your photo is uploaded only after you tap Analyze, read by an AI vision model for this analysis, deleted within 24 hours and never used for training. The same photo shows the same stored result if you run it again.
For the best read, use a clear, front-facing photo in daylight with no filter, and only you in the frame.
Frequently asked questions
What ethnicity do I look like?
Upload a clear photo and the AI gives an appearance-based guess of which world regions your face most resembles, as a top match and four to six regions with percentages, each with the visible traits that suggested it. It is a guess about appearance, not your ancestry.
Can AI tell my ethnicity from a photo?
No. Ethnicity is about culture and heritage, which a photo cannot show. AI can only notice visible traits and say which regions they are commonly associated with, so the result is labelled an appearance-based guess, not DNA.
Is the ethnicity guesser accurate?
Treat it as a fun guess. Lighting, makeup, tanning, hair dye and angle change the traits it looks at, appearance varies widely within every region, and mixed heritage often shows in ways a single photo cannot capture.
How can I find out my real ethnicity or ancestry?
Use a DNA test and family records. Consumer DNA tests compare your DNA with reference groups to estimate where your ancestors came from; birth, marriage, census and immigration records add names and places.
What is the difference between race and ethnicity?
Ethnicity is about shared culture — language, traditions and heritage. Race is a social category usually based on perceived physical traits, and its definitions vary between countries. Ancestry is where your ancestors came from.
Why did my result change with a different photo?
Different light, white balance, makeup and angle change skin tone and how features read, so different photos can lean towards different regions. The same photo always shows its stored result.
Is the ethnicity guesser free?
Yes. Your closest appearance match, summary and half of the region percentages are free. Every region with the features behind it costs 20 credits, one time — no subscription, and credits never expire.
Do you upload or store my photo?
Only when you tap Analyze. This tool needs AI vision, so your photo is uploaded and read by an AI model for this one analysis, deleted within 24 hours and never used for training. The measurement tools on this site, such as the face shape detector, run in your browser and do not upload your photo.
