The midface ratio compares the distance between your pupils with the height from your pupils to your upper lip. A ratio near 1.0 reads as a compact midface. This test measures both from your photo and shows the ratio with the lines drawn on it.
What is the midface ratio?
The midface ratio compares two distances: the distance between the centres of your pupils, and the height from your pupils down to your upper lip. When the two are about equal, the midface is called compact; when the vertical distance is longer, the midface is called long. Looksmaxxing communities treat a compact midface as attractive, especially in men, because it tends to come with forward-grown cheekbones and a shorter nose-to-lip area.
How the midface ratio test works
The test finds both pupil centres and the top of the upper lip from 478 landmarks, levels your head and divides pupil distance by pupil-to-lip height. On these landmarks a ratio between 0.96 and 1.08 is shown as a compact midface; lower values mean a longer midface, higher values a shorter one. The two measured lines are drawn on your photo.
Long midface: what can change it
Bone length does not change, but several things change how long the midface reads. A beard or moustache shortens the visible upper lip area. Brows styled lower and fuller bring the top of the midface down. Hairstyles with width at the cheekbones balance length. In photos, a camera slightly above eye level shortens the midface, while one below lengthens it. For the full vertical picture, see the facial thirds test.
Midface ratio vs FWHR
The two are often confused. The midface ratio is about the centre of the face: pupil distance against the height from the pupils to the upper lip. FWHR is about the whole face width: cheekbone width against the height from the brows to the upper lip. A face can have a compact midface and a low FWHR, or the reverse. The facial ratios calculator shows both side by side with ten other ratios.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good midface ratio?
A ratio close to 1 — pupil distance about equal to the height from the pupils to the upper lip — is called a compact midface. On this test, 0.96 to 1.08 is shown as compact.
Can you shorten a long midface?
The bone length does not change, but a moustache, lower and fuller brows, and hair with width at the cheekbones make the midface read shorter. Surgery exists but is major and should be discussed with a maxillofacial surgeon.
Will the same photo always get the same score?
Yes. Your score is calculated from fixed measurements with a fixed formula, not guessed by a chatbot, so the same photo always returns the same result. Different photos can differ because angle, distance, expression and lens change where your features appear.
