Hunter eyes combine a positive canthal tilt, a narrow eye opening and a low, close brow. This test measures all three from your photo and gives a hunter-eye match score out of 100, so you can see which trait you have and which you do not.

What are hunter eyes?

"Hunter eyes" is a looksmaxxing term for eyes that look deep-set, narrow and intense — the look often credited to actors with a strong, focused stare. There is no medical definition, but most descriptions agree on three traits:

  • A positive canthal tilt — the outer corner of the eye sits higher than the inner corner.
  • A narrow eye opening with little visible upper eyelid, so the eye looks almond-shaped rather than round.
  • Low, heavy brows that sit close to the eye, which makes the eyes look deep-set and shaded.

The term is mostly used about men, and it is closely tied to a strong brow ridge. Women with the same traits are more often described as having "cat eyes" or deep-set eyes.

Hunter eyes vs prey eyes

"Prey eyes" is the opposite: rounder, more open eyes with a neutral or negative tilt, plenty of visible upper eyelid and brows that sit higher above the eye. They read as soft, friendly or youthful rather than intense.

TraitHunter eyesPrey eyes
Canthal tiltPositiveNeutral or negative
Eye shapeNarrow, almondRound, wide open

Brow positionLow, close to the eyeHigher above the eye

Neither is "correct". Plenty of very attractive people, especially women, have rounder eyes. Most people sit somewhere in between, which is why this test gives a score instead of a yes or no.

How the hunter eyes test works

The test measures each trait from a straight-on photo, in your browser, after levelling your head:

  1. Canthal tilt (40% of the score) — the angle from the inner to the outer corner of each eye, averaged.
  2. Eye height vs width (30%) — a narrower opening scores higher.
  3. Brow-to-eye distance (30%) — the gap between the top of the eye and the top of the brow, compared with eye width; lower brows score higher.

The three are combined into a hunter score out of 100: 70 or more reads as hunter eyes, 50–69 as partial hunter eyes, below 50 as not hunter-type. You also see each trait on its own, so you know which one you have and which you do not.

Use a neutral face. Squinting narrows the eyes and lifts the lower lid, and raising your brows does the opposite — both change the result.

How to get hunter eyes

The bone behind your brow ridge and the position of your eye corners do not change with exercises. Videos that promise hunter eyes from "eye training" or facial yoga have no evidence behind them. What does change how your eyes read:

  • Lower body fat and less puffiness — less fat around the eyes makes them look more deep-set. Sleep and lower salt help with morning puffiness.
  • Brows — fuller, straighter brows that are not over-plucked sit visually lower and closer to the eye.
  • Expression — a relaxed lower lid with a very slight squint (often called "squinching") narrows the eye opening in photos.
  • Medical options — brow lifts, canthoplasty and other eyelid procedures exist, carry real risks and are not reversible. Discuss them with a board-certified oculoplastic surgeon.

For the tilt on its own, the canthal tilt test gives exact angles for each eye, and the eye shape detector classifies your overall eye shape and spacing.

Frequently asked questions

What are hunter eyes?

Hunter eyes is a looksmaxxing term for eyes that look deep-set and intense: a positive canthal tilt, a narrow eye opening with little visible upper eyelid, and low-set brows close to the eye. The opposite is often called prey eyes — rounder, more open eyes with a neutral or negative tilt.

How does the hunter eyes test work?

It measures the three traits from your photo — canthal tilt (40% of the score), eye height versus width (30%) and brow-to-eye distance (30%) — and combines them into a 0–100 hunter score: 70+ reads as hunter eyes, 50–69 as partial, below 50 as not hunter-type.

Can I get hunter eyes?

The bone structure behind canthal tilt and brow position does not change with exercises. Brow grooming, getting enough sleep, reducing puffiness and a relaxed rather than wide-eyed expression in photos can change how intense your eyes look.

What are deep-set eyes?

Deep-set eyes sit further back under the brow bone, so the brow casts more shadow and less upper eyelid shows. They are one of the main features people mean by hunter eyes.

Can women have hunter eyes?

Yes. The traits — positive tilt, narrow opening, low brows — occur in women too, though the term is mostly used about men. Women with these traits are more often described as having cat eyes or deep-set eyes.

Is hunter eyes a compliment?

Usually, yes. In looksmaxxing slang it describes intense, deep-set eyes that are widely considered attractive in men. Outside those communities many people have not heard the term.

What causes hunter eyes?

Mostly bone structure: a prominent brow ridge and orbit shape that set the eyes deeper, plus a positive canthal tilt. Low body fat around the eyes makes them more visible.

Do you upload or store my photo?

No. Scoring and measurement run entirely in your browser: the face model downloads to your device and your photo never leaves it. Only the AI Analysis tools (such as age or color analysis) send a photo to our server, and they say so before you upload.
