How our face rating works

HowAttractiveAmI measures the geometry of your face from a photo. A face model finds 478 landmarks in your browser, we correct for head angle, compute 40+ measurements, score eight areas against reference ranges and combine them into a 1–10 score. No chatbot guesses your score, so the same photo always gets the same result, and your photo never leaves your device.

1. Finding your face — in your browser

We use Google's MediaPipe Face Landmarker, which places 478 points on the face (468 face-mesh points plus 10 iris points) and estimates the head's 3D pose. The model downloads to your device and runs there. Your photo is not uploaded for scoring or measuring.

2. Checking the photo

Measurements move a lot with the photo, so every result starts with a photo check:

  • Head level and facing the camera — if your head is tilted up or down more than 10° or turned more than 10°, we don't score the photo and ask for another.
  • Neutral expression — smiling moves the mouth, cheek and jaw points, so we flag it.
  • Eyes open, one face, face large enough — flagged when they fail.

3. Correcting for head angle

Small head turns make one side of the face look wider and tilts change vertical proportions — the main reason the same person gets different results. We use the estimated 3D head pose to rotate the landmarks back to a straight-on view before measuring. (The face model reads about 6° of upward pitch on a level head, so we treat that as level.) In our calibration, four photos with heads turned 3.5–5° scored 79–83 for symmetry before this correction and 93–95 after it.

4. Averaging several photos

You can add up to 2 more photos after the first. Each one goes through the same photo check; photos that are tilted or turned too far are left out. Every measurement is averaged across the photos that pass, and the scores are calculated from those averages. This evens out small differences in angle, light and expression between photos.

5. Scoring eight areas

Each area is scored 0–100 by how close your measurements are to a reference range, then weighted:

AreaWeightWhat it measures
Symmetry20%Mirror distance of 27 left/right landmark pairs across your fitted midline
Eyes17%Canthal tilt, eye spacing (ESR), gap between the eyes vs eye width, eye height vs width
Jawline13%Jaw width vs cheekbones, jaw angle estimate, jaw symmetry
Proportions12%Rule of fifths, midface ratio, facial width-to-height ratio (FWHR)
Facial Thirds12%Middle third vs lower third of the face
Golden Ratio10%Face length vs width, mouth width vs nose width
Dimorphism8%How masculine or feminine the bone ratios read, scored for the gender you choose
Harmony8%Lip ratio, brow-to-eye distance, midface balance

Reference ranges for jaw, brows, eyes and dimorphism differ for men and women, so we ask which to use. Your strongest area is highlighted on the result.

6. The 1–10 scale is not inflated

Many rating sites give almost everyone an 8 or 9. A 2024 study in Facial Plastic Surgery & Aesthetic Medicine had five AI rating websites and a human panel score the same 40 faces: the websites averaged 6.9/10, the humans 5.0/10 (Goshtasbi, Hakimi & Wong). We set the scale so a typical, well-taken photo lands around 6: 6–7 reads as above average, 7–8 attractive, 8–9 very attractive and 9+ striking. The PSL page converts the same score to the 1–8 PSL scale, where about 4 is the middle. We do not show "top x%" figures until we have enough real results to back them.

7. Lighting and filters

Only landmark positions are scored, so skin color is not an input. We tested four photos brightened, darkened, lowered in contrast and run through a whitening filter: brightness and contrast moved scores by at most 0.5 points, and whitening by at most 0.2, in no consistent direction. Filters that reshape the face (slimming, eye enlarging) change the geometry and therefore the score.

8. Limits you should know

  • One photo, not your face. Camera distance and lens change proportions: a close selfie makes the nose and centre of the face look wider. Arm's length at eye level works best.
  • Geometry only. Skin, hair, style, expression, voice and personality all matter to attractiveness and none of them are scored.
  • Averages are not ideals for everyone. Typical proportions vary between people and ethnic backgrounds; a measurement outside a reference range is a description, not a flaw.
  • Estimates, not medical measurements. Jaw angle from a front photo and pupillary distance from a selfie are estimates. Use an optician for prescription glasses.
  • Adults only. The rating tools are for people 18 and over, for entertainment and self-improvement.

9. What is free and what is paid

The score, radar chart, strongest feature and half of the breakdown on every measurement tool are free with no sign-up. The full report — every measurement, AI-written analysis of each feature and an improvement plan — costs 230 credits once. There is no subscription and no invite wall. AI Analysis tools such as age or color analysis upload your photo to our server for that one analysis and tell you before you upload.
